About

Nick Hewitt

Hello and welcome!

I’ve spent my life immersed in naval and military history – a passion sparked in childhood and shaped by academic study at Lancaster University and King’s College London. My professional journey began at the Imperial War Museum, where I became the permanent historian aboard HMS Belfast, curating exhibitions and writing my first book.

Over the past three decades, I’ve dedicated my work to uncovering and sharing the often-overlooked contributions of sailors in the world wars. From directing major museum exhibitions and overseeing multi-million-pound heritage projects to appearing on national television and radio, I’ve sought to make naval history engaging and accessible for all.

As a former Head of Collections and Research at the National Museum of the Royal Navy, I led the £7 million restoration of LCT 7074, the last surviving D-Day tank landing craft. Today, I continue to champion public history as a Heritage Consultant, bringing deep knowledge, strategic insight, and a love of storytelling to cultural
projects across the UK.
